The Deutsche Schule Metro Detroit celebrated the end of the school year with
an "Abschulssfeier" celebration on Monday, June 9, 2008. The Troy Niles
Center performance hall was transformed into a mystical place with train
tracks leading to wondrous lands. The school's Schaffner", Natalie Steimel,
handed out programs and blew a large wooden train whistle as she conducted
the group on a joyful journey. The DSMD Schulexpress took the parents,
grandparents, teachers and students on an adventurous train ride which
included eight stops to different magical sites. At each train stop, the
respective classes performed skits, songs, or dances. Some of the DSMD's
older children even wrote their own poems in der Land der Dichter".
One of the Kindergarten classes delighted the audience with the story of
"Die kleine Raupe Nimmersatt". During this performance, the children slowly
and gracefully transformed themselves from tiny caterpillars into colorful
butterflies. On their journey, students and parents also visited der Land
der Umlaute" and das Land der ABC's. Each class had their own rail wagon,
which was decorated by the class in accordance with their particular theme.
After every stop, an additional wagon was attached to the engine, after the
classes' performance. With the attachment of each wagon, the train grew
larger and larger after every stop.
The school yearend celebration concluded with a hot dog dinner for the
students, parents and DSMD teachers. Parents also provided a variety of
different salads and baked goods for dessert. The Deutsche Schule Metro
Detroit was very thankful to the DSMD teachers and students, who did a great
job in their preparation and execution of their performances. Special thanks
were also given to Rica Lade and Kerstin Schicke for their commitment and
dedication in organizing the performance.
Throughout the year, it was not surprising to see how much the students
enjoyed learning the German language from the DSMD's highly-qualified and
degreed teaching staff. This was definitely evident at this year's
Weihnachtsfeier and Abschlussfeier performances. It was a pleasure to watch
the parents enjoy their chil-dren's proud faces, as the students were able
to show off what they had learned. These performances allowed the children
to have fun, while learning the German language and culture. The Deutsche
Schule Metro Detroit also teamed up with other German-American organizations
to help promote the German culture, such as the Laternenlauf last November,
and the Kinderfasching in February. Hundreds of children were in attendance.
The Deutsche Schule Metro Detroit will be offering German adult intensive
language classes for adult beginners this summer. These adult classes will
continue in the fall as well. The DSMD is offering the German adult language
classes both onsite, at the Niles Center, as well as offsite, throughout the
year. The DSMD is currently accepting fall registration for children
(native, second language and German as a foreign language). Please see the
Deutsche Schule Metro Detroit's website for more information on its diverse
programs and course offerings at www.deutsche schulemetrodetroit.com.
