What’s NEW at Deutsche Schule Metro Detroit?

Please join us for an Open House!

Quiz game at Meadowbrook - Unity Day - October 201

Troy - What a busy year it has been at Deutsche Schule Metro Detroit.  We started off this school year with additional language programs.  We now offer not only German, but Spanish, French and Latin for all language levels.

Here are the latest happenings with our school:

Last summer our school was honored to receive a scholarship to the Annual Convention & World Languages Expo (ACTFL) from the “Zentralstelle für Auslandsschulwesen”.  The convention took place this year in Philadelphia in November.  If you thought foreign language was on the decline, think again.  We were able to browse among 250 exhibits and visit countless workshops and seminars.  Thank you ZfA (Central Agency of Schools Abroad) for this wonderful learning experience.

In early October, Fred Hoffman, Honorary Consul of the Federal Republic of Germany, invited us to his German Unity Day celebration at Meadowbrook Hall in Rochester.  DSMD students were able to entertain and stun the German American Chamber of Commerce audience with a quiz game:  “Reiseland Deutschland!” How well do you know Germany”.  The audience was able to guess many of the amusing questions about Germany.

In November we also hosted a “Deutschtag” that was sponsored by the Central Agency for Schools Abroad (ZfA).  Many of our students were awarded gift cards by the ZfA for their participation in the program’s writing competition.  The topic was “Deutschland heute  -Industrie- und Wirtschaftsstandort Deutschland,  Deutschlands Rolle in der europäischen und internationalen Politik, Kultur und Landeskunde Deutschlands bzw. deutschsprachiger Länder/Regionen, Deutschland als Herkunfts- und/oder Urlaubsland.”  Each student researched a topic, created a colorful and informative poster board and presented their project to our judges and parents followed by a question and answer session.  We learned many new and old things about Germany.  This gave us a great opportunity for our students to showcase their language and communication skills, as well as their knowledge of Germany. We thank the Central Agency for Schools Abroad (ZfA) for all of their support.

On December 1st, some of our DSMD students performed at the Birmingham Winter Markt with a play about the many German Christmas traditions. Our annual “Weihnachtsfeier” was also held at the Niles Center on December 3, 2012.  Each class delighted the parents with a play or a skit.  Sankt Nikolaus was greeted with many hugs from the children as he entered the auditorium to hand out treats.  The evening ended with a holiday after-glow with pizza, salads, treats and conversation among the many parents, Omas and Opas and staff. Our students’ achievements were also recognized during this event. Fred Hoffman honored us with a visit to both events.  We appreciate his continued support of our school and the German-American community.  Also a special “Dankeschön” goes out to multi-talented, Herbert Gruber, for his musical performances at both events.

Please join us for Deutsche Schule Metro Detroit’s Annual Open House on Monday, February 4, 2013 from 6:00 pm until 7:30 pm at its Niles Center location in Troy, 201 W. Square Lake Road (19 Mile Road) just west of Livernois. We will have information on our German native and second language and German as a foreign language classes for children ages 1 and up.  We also can provide you with an overview of our German language classes for adults and corporate German language classes. We also will have information on our Spanish, French and Latin language programs.  It is a great opportunity for you to meet our teachers and staff. You are welcome to stop by, tour our school and enjoy refreshments in a relaxed atmosphere at our Open House.

Our German language program is based on the Bavarian curriculum, and our German as a foreign language program follows the Common European Framework for languages. All of our teachers are highly-qualified, degreed, professional educators.

Please ask us about our extensive testing programs and accreditations.
