Michigans Siebenbuerger Sachsen feierten 100-Jaehriges Bestehen

Mitglieder der Siebenbürger Sachsen in ihrer Tracht.

Die Siebenbürger Sachsen (Transylvanian Saxons) feierten ihr 100. Jubiläum am 18. May 2013 in der Carpathia Halle.  Der Verein existiert schon über 100 Jahre, seit dem

23. Februar 1913.

Sterling Heights - The evening dinner/dance was attended by the National President of the Alliance of Transylvanian Saxons, Tom Manning, the Board of the ATS and all the Branch Presidents to help in the celebration of the Alliance Transylvanian Saxons, Br. 37’s 100th Anniversary.  Everyone was entertained by the GBU Saxonia Rheingold Chor, starting with the National Anthem and Siebenbuergen, with everyone joining in, followed by beautiful selection of songs performed by the chorus.  At one time members of Br. 37 used to be part of the group, hence the name “Saxonia”.  This evening was enjoyed by about 200 people with an excellent dinner served and prepared by the Carpathia cooks and followed by dancing to the music of The Vagabonds.

A very special presentation was made to Brother Bill Lutsch, by ATS President Tom Manning and Susi Fleischer, President of the Transylvanian Saxons, for being a member of Br. 37 for 75 years.  Bill was accompanied by his family for this special occasion.  The following members were presented with 50 year pins and a certificate for their membership of 50 years with Br. 37.  Katharina Fedototszkin, John Fleischer, Sam Fleischer and Trudy Klein.  Heidi Alesi, also a 50 year member, was not able to attend.

Greetings were given by Pres. Susi Fleischer, Br. 37; ATS Pres. Tom Manning; Mayor Richard Notte of Sterling Heights, followed by the speaker of the evening George Schemmel, Sr., whose family was one of the founding members of Br. 37.

George was accompanied by some of his family members, his sister Frieda, two granddaughters and 3 great grand children.  It is always a pleasure to see members and friends at these special occasions.

We also had two Saxon Handicraft Exhibits, one in the main hall done by Katharina and George Breckner and a second display, which needed more room, in the GACC room prepared by John & Mary Ann Fleischer.  Thanks for your dedicated work.  John Fleischer also made a plaque for the center of each table from Plexiglas with the Siebenbuerger Sachsen emblem on one side and the ATS emblem on the other, which we will be able to use at other functions as a table decoration.

Every attendee was presented with a tote bag which was sewn from scrap upholstery material donated by Trudy Kalvin and sewn by Katie Moody and Susi Fleischer, with the ATS emblem and the years of existence sewn on the outside pocket of the bag.  The cost of the emblem patches was donated by Ingrid Weihs Ferguson and Jim Wiseman.  Thanks ladies for a job well done.  Special thanks to Janet Nelson for the beautiful bouquet of flowers at the front table located in the entrance of the hall.

A special thank you to Ingrid Weihs Ferguson for chairing the 100th Anniversary celebration and to Debbie Ferguson for taking care of the reservations and decorating the tables.  Thanks to each and everyone who contributed in some way in making this affair an enjoyable and memorable evening, which I believe everyone had a great time.

Saxonally yours until next time.

Sue Fleischer
