Toledo - The Verein, as it does every year after the GAF Festival,
purchased, prepared and served lunch and dinner to almost a hundred
volunteers working on the festival clean-up. Erick Schiehlen and Danny Ash
coordinated and added their culinary expertise to the effort. Lunch
consisted of pork roast, spätzle with gravy and red cabbage. No one went
away hungry, with many complements for an excellent meal. A light evening
meal which included hamburgers was also served.
The Verein recently awarded six college scholarships of $500 each to the
Elise Lohmann (Univ. of Toledo)
Kristen Scott (Owens College)
Brian Mathe (Michigan Tech.)
Taylor Waggoner (Ohio State)
The Chris Ziegler scho-larship to: Emily Belcik (Capital Univ.)
The Marie Schmalzried scholarship to: Craig Lohmann (BGSU)
The Schwabenverein has given scholarships for 12 years, in that time it has
given 90 scholarships totaling $45,000.
On Saturday, October 6, the Verein (coordinated by the Entertainment
Committee and D&D Pfouts) held its first “Oktoberfest” at the Oak Shade
Grove in Oregon, Ohio. The event was fantastic! Great music by “The
Homewreckers” in the outdoor pavilion and the large festival tent put the
crowd in a great mood. Even though the weather was on the chilly side the
bonfire, the beer keg throwing and the beer stein competitions really warmed
up the atmosphere. There was a large choice of beers available, both
American and German. For those interested in food there were brats,
pretzels, landjäger, other snacks and souvenirs.
The first “Oktoberfest” at the Grove was enjoyed by young and old.
